Modern Floral Carpets

Graphic Blue Floral Carpet

 Coventry via Layla Grayce

Well, I hope every Mama out there had a fabulous Mother’s Day! I know I sure did. I ran my first 5K race, worked for a few hours and finished the day having dinner with my two favourite people in the whole world, my boys, in case you didn’t know. What better way to follow up Mother’s Day than to glimpse, peruse and admire some modern floral carpets? Shall we?

Blue and White Floral Carpet

These Amy Butler designs caught my eye. Not only are they perfectly pretty in every which way, but they add a modern graphic detail you can use to accentuate colour already present in a room, or to add a splash where there wasn’t one. The blue and white rug pictured above is sweet. I love that the pattern meanders instead of repeating. It leads your eye.

Red Floral Carpet

While I certainly gravitate to teals, blues, turquoises, mints and greens, the pink and red of the carpet pictured above is like a little visual vacay. I love a little clash, especially in a carpet. Not all floral carpets are exquisite like these, saturated with such inviting hues or woven with such divine detail.

Textiles are my absolute favourite thing right now. I work with fabric and it gives me all these crazy ideas of colour combinations, pattern layers and texture possibilities. Limitlessness sits well with me. Where it overwhelms some I feel like I am home. Grounded in option. Woven into the pattern. Everyone needs a little bliss in their everyday life.

Multi-coloured or two-tone each of these modern floral carpets begs for bare toes, long reading stints, and of course a good session of on your belly colouring.

The Writing on the Walls

Quote Written on a Wall Post

Pinterest

The writing on the walls is a summation of events which you may or may not interpret, but what if you could alter that? Determine the outcome? Write the writing on the walls? While many of you may be scrubbing little people’s ideas of writing on the walls, perhaps they aspire to leave great messages for you to ponder. Or maybe it is a sign for you to take matters into your own hands and write what you write.

Writing on Blue Wall

Design is Mine

If the writing on the walls were laid out with clear logic in poetic verse… on a wall painted the blue of a sunny skied day, I think the days would be good! And also I am in love with tufting as seen here and three images below. Gorgeous!! Just wait until we get into sofas. Coming soon!

Hand Writing on Dining Room Wall

Recycled Consign and Design

What do you want your walls to say? Your favourite verse, quote, lyric… maybe even a directive or idea for your family to live with or by?

Large Writing on White Wall

 Pinterest

I want to write a Haruki Murakami novel all over my walls. How surreal that would be, even now I get flashbacks from the Windup Bird Chronicle when he’s in that tunnel and can’t get back. Of course my favourite Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World would be more of a contender for my walls.

Lyrics Written on Walls

First Time Fancy

Make sure your penmanship is top notch to avoid it taking on that gone off the deep end look we see in movies about serial killers. Writing on the walls is something many of us have tried our hands at, at one point or another (admit it! bathroom stalls, graffiti, etc.) but let’s try it again, with deliberation, because with deliberation great things come.

Valentine Red in the Bedroom

Red Headboard

House Beautiful

Splash and dash Valentine red in the bedroom everywhere or use it to rev your heart and up the pulse a beat or two. Yes, relationships can be complicated. But love? Love is ever so simple. To appreciate the light and truth and good in another being is what it’s all about. To actively honour that sweetness with love is special, so if you are lucky enough to have that person in your life, embrace him or her with all your might!!

Red Bedroom with Pillows and Tables

Pinterest

Like attracts like as you can see with these twin red tables at the foot of the bed. I love this combination of pink and red. So Valentine. The bright hues are well balanced with the black bed, and the white in the bedding and the carpet.

Red Bedroom with Patterned Headboard

House to Home

My favourite element in this room is the lamp. The combination of red and fuchsia is vibrant and juicy and makes my mouth water for fruit punch! Grown-ups do not drink enough fruit punch!! Whether you choose to commit to a colour-tastic colour scheme or a muted one with pops of red, Valentine red can be added to your bedroom for the day or on a more permanent basis. Experiment with pillows and accessories or go for it and paint a wall red.

Dream Offices in the Backyard and the Psychic at Londonderry Mall

Dream Office Barn Style

A Holy Experience

A quiet retreat to write in? A separate space to create within? An official daydream station? Dream offices in the backyard are adorable! I want one! No, I want two. One for writing and one for crafting. Oh the work I would get done gazing out the window, sipping tea, books stacked everywhere. I can see it now. So clear. But the question is, which one? Which design would be best. It depends on your intent for the space. Crafters and sewers will need extra space to accommodate projects, small business owners and writers will require at least a desk and somewhere to sit.

Dream Office Sewing Rroom

Design Editor

So, about the psychic… I was approached by an elderly lady at Londonderry Mall, not surprising really, people talk to me everywhere I go! It was at least two years ago, and like most strangers, she decided to offer me some advice. She rambled on about a little something I won’t mention just now, perhaps in reference later if it comes true, but at the time it was like this far-fetched tidbit pulled out of thin air. It had no bearing on my circumstances. I have been to psychics before (Russian Tea Room), but this was not the same thing. I think about the encounter now and then.

Dream Office with French Doors

Babble

Life has changed. A portion of her prophecy could come true if my world continues on the path laid out. I speculated about this to a friend the other night and to my surprise she too had had an encounter with a seemingly regular old lady at Londonderry Mall. The lady said to her, “Maybe you’ll get a new car for Christmas.” Days later Jolene and her family were in a car accident. Luckily they were okay! However, she will be getting a new car.

So here’s my question… Is there a psychic wandering the halls of Londonderry Mall? Or is there simply a high concentration of elderly ladies who seek out people like Jolene and I and offer us not so random prophecies? I am curious how many others have run into a woman like this and could it be the same one??

Dream Office with Window

Sunset

A prophecy is a prophecy, but I believe we can change anything with a dream. With that said, I have been imagining a dream office to write in ever since I caught a glimpse of a separate office space sitting on someone’s property somewhere in the middle of Canada (sorry! I can’t be sure where, it was long ago).

Dream Office in Green

 iVillage

Dream Office Must Haves:

  • A chandelier to class the space up
  • A desk
  • Windows for uninterupted daydreaming
  • Mirrors to bounce the light around
  • A cozy desk chair
  • Reading Space in a Corner
  • A sweet winding path (even if its only a few feet long)

Dream Office Shed

Historic Shed

I love the awning detail in the second photo and can imagine all sorts of exterior landscaping ideas. Potted plants can be changed and updated with the season or holiday so I think they would be a good option for this type of structure. Many of these have been converted from sheds or garages. What a great idea!

Dream Office in Colourful Hues

Pinterest

I think if you personalized the structure with details from your house and/or garage you would get the best results for a cohesive look on your property. But, hey, maybe you want something wild and fun.

Dream Office with Greenery

Renee Finberg

What type of space do you dream of? And what would you fill it with? Thoughts? Ideas? Concepts? Hopes? Oh, the possibilities… As for the psychic, maybe she should set up a booth!

Bright New Beginnings

Rainy Window

Dreaming of June is offically one year old! Out of babyhood and into the toddler years we go! First off, I would like to thank each and every individual pair of eyes that have stopped by and read me here. My supporters– I am ever so thankful for you! As DOJ continues to grow and expand into my ultimate vision, I know you will be right there with me. Mwah!! While 2012 was a year of deconstruction for me personally, I believe 2013 will be a year filled with bright new beginnings. When you take the time to build a path and fill it with dreams you can act on, happiness will prevail!

In order to construct, there are sometimes periods of deconstruction. And well, 2012 was a year of great change filled with said deconstruction. Let me just say that divorce is like a tornado, a hurricane, a tsunami, some great yet unnatural disaster that rips your life apart and leaves you baffled and confused. And so you grasp at the remainders, the truths, the little certainties that make your heart tick. Little faces, family, dear friends, decor (you know it!) things that keep your momentum going forward until some semblance of normalcy kicks in and overrides what was.

I hesitated for a long time about mentioning the divorce here, this is a happy place for me and I do not want clouds to cast shadows, but I also want to engage my readers and let you into my little world, the good, the bad and the beautiful! This blog was built in the midst of great ruins and in it’s building I have made many discoveries. Good ones. Passionate ones. This new year is filled with the promise of bright new beginnings in more ways than one. Dreaming of June has grown and will continue to grow in it’s own way branching out and branching up across the great big beautiful ever changing, hue-bent sky. So stay tuned and visit often. I welcome feedback, comments and suggestions on posts you would like to see and topics you would like to explore. Here are some of the year’s besties:

My heart is brimming with excitement for what this new year holds in store for me both personally and for Dreaming of June. I expect more great change. Change of the constructive sort. Change of the imminent sort. Change of the unexpected serendipitous sort. There will be much building, this much I can promise. So, here’s to you my readers and the wonderful year ahead!!

4 Pretty Kitchens

Pretty Kitchen with Chandelier

Veronika’s Blushing via Decor Pad

Well, it is certainly no secret that I love pretty. Each of these kitchens has pretty factor, but with it’s own twist of elegance and character. For me, pretty is in the details, small and large, and can be achieved in any space be it masculine or feminine. These 4 pretty kitchens embrace their own style and include just enough pretty. See? Pretty is for everyone.

Pretty Kitchen with a Mint Palette

Cape Cod Collegiate

Elements to Increase Pretty Factor in your Kitchen:

Tufting- Tufting creates visual interest in the best way possible. In the kitchen a tufted bench, chairs or even a banquette will work.

Curvy Lines- Tables, chairs, decorative moldings and cabinetry help break up and soften the lines of definitive fixed elements and hard surfaces like stone counter tops.

Delicate Patterns- Swirly curly patterns like trellis, lattice, florals, geometrics, botanicals and damask will add visual appeal to your kitchen and give you a motif you can repeat in small doses to unify the space.

Pretty Kitchen Galley Style

 House Beautiful

Gloss and Shine- Objects that glisten pretty up even the darkest spaces. Look to lighting choices such as chandeliers, glass pendants, and drum chandeliers to bounce light around the room. Include accessories and dishware with elegant details and display some of them.

Colour Palette- Most colour palettes can be dressed pretty, however certain colour schemes welcome pretty readily. Of course white or white and silver would be at the top of my list, but work with whatever your colours are and personalize it to your taste. The result, (I’m sure) will be an eclectic pretty unlike any other space.

Pretty Kitchen with Elegant Backsplash

Textiles- Inject pattern and colour with the use of the textiles. A patterned carpet or set of curtains can set the tone for the room. You can also change them for a different look.

As you have seen in the 4 pretty kitchens pictured above, pretty things can be worked into your kitchen design in several easy ways and they really do make a difference in the overall look of the space.

5 Things to Do on a Perfect Autumn Day

Autumn at Dreaming of June

It is undoubtedly a perfect autumn day here in Edmonton. Clear skies, chilly breezes and bright beautiful sunshine. In case you have such a day on hand and you don’t know what to do, I thought I would share 5 things to do on a perfect autumn day.

Thrift Shopping

Look for end of season garage sales and pounce on them. End of season garage salers are looking to unload whatever remains of their treasures, so they don’t have to keep them all winter long. Bargain with said folks and you might be surprised at what they are willing to throw in to sweeten the pot and lighten their load. While the weather is still nice, head to thrift shops to look for furniture you can reconfigure, upcycle and make your own. Look for character pieces to mix with your existing furniture and haul it home before the snow flies. Trust me, we had a mini taste of it yesterday (don’t worry, it melted!) and let’s just say the cold was no less shocking than it is any other year! So grab that vintage-y table and run.

Baking

Open the windows and air out your home as you bake something deliciously apple-liscious. Fresh air + bakiing apples = autumn day heaven. I promised the boys we would bake banana chocolate chip muffins, so the apples will have to wait till tomorrow. However, I did buy giant bags of apples and pears which will make a delightful crisp together. Yum!

Painting

Enjoy the day and get something done at the same time. Multi-task with the right mix of things and life is grand!! Realistically, how many diy outdoor paint project days are left in this northern climate? Finish that chair, table, headboard, etc., you know it needs to be done. I have a small kid’s Ikea table that needs work as it is currently covered with randomn doodles, and a peeling paint surface. Wait till you see what I have planned for it!

Outdoor Clean Up

Lucky for me, the great big winds have been blowing the leaves straight out of my yard, but YOU might have leaves to rake. Of course there are other chores to get done–wash windows, decorate your home for the season with autumn and Halloween decor, some of us northern folk may even take this day as an opportunity to hang Christmas lights (yes, I know its early, but we won’t turn them on yet, well, except for my one neighbour) or hang a seasonal wreath on your door. And then, when you are done, why not take a walk?

Visiting

Throw a dinner party, put on a pot of coffee or tea or head out somewhere! This is my plan for the day. My brother and his family are coming over for a visit with me and my boys! And as a special added bonus, he might even bring some wood glue so I can begin the Ikea table makeover. Whatever you do today, I hope these 5 things to do on a perfect autum day brought you a little inspiration. So light some candles, take a breath of the freshest air and enjoy your day!

8 Clocks to Count On

Be Here Now Clock

M Bart Studios

If you have to think about time and check on it and work with and essentially live by it, it only makes sense to count on a clock that will serve that time up to you with a little beauty. I think we can all agree we need more time! I need more time in at least two categories of my life: organization and enjoyment. They go hand in hand. My goal is to organize daily details with the idea of freeing up extra time to enjoy the little things that make me happy. What would you do with more time? I found 8 clocks to count on, but you really only need one. The inside one.

Red and White Plate Clock

Making Time TC

I imagine this red and white beaut would be adorable in a kitchen.

Time to Organize:

The back closet

The kitchen drawer I swear I keep organizing!

My schedule

My writing time, fiction vs. non-fiction!

Scallop Clock

Uncommon

I love scallops, not the ocean ones, the pretty pretty ones!

Time to Enjoy:

Sunsets

Reading

Sleep

Making messes with the kids in the form of baking and crafting.

Meditation

Vintage Book Clock

Bertrand Musset

This vintage book clock would be perfect for an office space or library.

Goethe Clock

M Bart Studios

A Goethe quote on a clock? Um, yes please! Decorate your time with literature? Why, sure! “Everyday we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and if possible, speak a few sensible words.” So true.

Birds on a Branch Clock

Shelly Ka

Birds on a branch is a popular motif for nursery decor and kid’s rooms. And how cute, right?

Wooden Damask Clock

Wavy Navy

Damask painted on wood, what a lovely design.

I couldn’t agree more. The time is now. It always has been and always will be. So look around and enjoy it!

Painted Front Doors

Turquoise Door

Shut the Front Door!

I love it when people paint their front door in a wild bright colour. It lets you know ‘fun’ people reside within. Is your front door painted? Are you ‘fun’? I would like to test and prove this theory. In terms of curb appeal, the front door is a pretty important place. You can leave the front door neutral and let it blend in to every other house on your block, or you can paint it and stand out! Painted front doors can give your home a whimsical, polished look especially if you choose to accessorize and style it accordingly.

Yellow Door

Image via Pinterest

When you style your front door consider fixed elements (stair rails, fences, steps, hardware, lighting, house numbers, etc.) and changeable elements which you can switch throughout the year. Changeable items like planters, urns, a welcome mat and other styling props will pull the whole look together. And you can create different vignettes for different seasons and holidays.

Red Door

The red door flanked with twin topiaries is just lovely. Red is probably my favourite colour for a front door. It pops out at you more than any other colour, yet it retains a certain sense of classic-ness.

Green Door

Not only do I enjoy this painted door because it is the exact colour of my living room walls, but it works well with this whole porch area.

Blue Front Door

Painted front doors like this pretty cerulean blue are a quick fix way to bring energy and increase curb appeal. Plus, don’t you want to let everyone know how fun you are?

Sugarboo Pillows and 15 Things

Life is Beauty Full

Life is Beauty Full via Layla Grayce

The calender has turned and the leaves have started to change to grades of yellow. Two by two. The heat wave halts. The rains come. Order ushers and cajoles the lazy summer sunshiny days into form. Into shape. As the seasons change, the reasons rearrange. I want to say something big and bold and inspirational about the summer, but I search for the right words and they elude me and scatter off like bunnies whenever I feel close. Instead I will face forward and embrace the coming winds with ideas on layering and padding the home with comfort items like Sugarboo pillows, throw blankets and other fabulous creature comforts that make the heart sing a song of autumnal enchantment.

Layla Grayce has a whole line of Sugarboo pillows , signs and art with quirky designs and sweet inspirational sayings. To create a fresh autumn look in your living room, layer a few graphic pillows with solids, textures and patterns. In the coming months as indoor time increases, think about creating different nooks in the home. Places you can read, play board games, complete craft projects, and watch movies.

My Whole Heart ScriptMy Whole Heart Script via Layla Grayce

Movies like Griff the Invisible, starring Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) of True Blood fame. Side note: it amazes me how many actors on True Blood pull off total American accents when they are in fact European or Australian. Some good acting there! Side note to the side note: what a finale for True Blood! Back to Griff and the time spent cozied on the couch dreaming up new pillow schematics– what a surprisingly cute film. It is much more of a love story than a super hero action film. Indie love. So cute!

Inspired by this 25 Things post I saw at aka Design, I decided to put my own list of summations together. Summer passed me by like two cars zooming past each other into the lightning lit night. Flares of August heat have given way to a shivery September, an indication of what will come, weather wise.

1. Songza is my new favourite app! It creates play lists in a variety of categories like Office Crowd Pleasers and Drop a Beat Workouts. I am so happy to have found this as I was getting very bored of my own play lists that I listen to at the gym!

2. I needed a new soundtrack to make my life feel like a movie. Who wants to do the voice over?

3. Summer is over.

4. I became a stylist for Stella and Dot and I looooove it! Beautiful jewelry and a dynamic group of awesome, positive people!

5. Plus it feeds my love of pretty shiny things.

6. School brings structure which equals more time to write and uncover decor-tastic images, craft and DIY projects and other goodies!

I Love You EverywhereI Love You Everywhere via Layla Grayce

7. I need to develop a schedule. I love structure.

8. I have become a creature of habit.

9. I realized my home needs more pattern. I use a mixture of solids and textures, but I need more pattern.

10. My favourite patterns right now: herringbone, trellis, paisley, damask, stripes, botanicals and typographic designs.

11. I look forward to the cool weather.

12. I will make butternut squash soup and share my recipe with you.

13. I will make apple crisp and share my recipe too.

14. I must get my painting projects done soon, before it gets really, really cold!

15. What painting projects you ask? You shall see in the coming weeks!
