Laurel Wreath Love

As if my love of crowns wasn’t enough people! Now I’m enamoured with the laurel wreath. Of course it is the wreathiest time of the year, so its not out of the question that one might come across a few green specimens to admire. But laurel, oh wow, wait till you see the incarnations I have found. I just love it when things come together. You see, the other night, well a week or more ago, I was watching the Mindy Project, have you seen it? It’s so funny. Mindy made a wreath which she called Wreath Witherspoon as it was covered with magazine cutouts of Reese Witherspoon. So funny. And then I saw the vintage laurel award pictured above…and I fell in love a little. Just a little. Look at it. It is gorgeous.

And what of the history you ask? Well, the origins of the laurel wreath begin with a tragic love story. Greek God Apollo slighted Eros (later known as cupid) who then shot him with a gold tipped arrow so that he would fall in love with Daphne (a nymph), but sadly Daphne was also shot with an arrow. A lead tipped arrow that repelled love. She spent her life running from Apollo until her father turned her into a tree. A laurel of course. So laurel became the symbol of the devastated God. And he often wore it in his hair and bestowed it upon the victors at sporting events etc. Which is why it is used as a symbol of victory.

And today we incorporate it into our Christmas decor in the form of green wreaths and greeting cards and chalkboard-style printables. The joyful printable pictured above can be printed free of charge if you follow the link. Ok, so new goal: win something so that I am awarded a vintage French laurel wreath award. Now what must I do to win one?

Why keep it strictly for the holidays? Let’s combine laurel wreaths with jewelry and see what happens. Well you knew what was coming, didn’t you? Irresistible beauties. If you don’t want to decorate with it,  you could always wear it. A ring? A necklace? Oh my!

Another interesting fact, many tiaras and crowns have a laurel detail about them. I swear I was a queen in a past life! Happy holidays readers and friends. Be good to one another and may all your wishes come true in the new year and beyond! XOXOXO

Crown Decor Galore

Desire to Inspire

Well if you can’t wear a crown every day, you could always get your fix with crown inspired decor. Crowns are not just for the royals you know. So if you need to channel elegance and poise for your home check out these beauties. On this quiet, already snowy morning, crowns, a little background music and of course some strong coffee are in order. Sounds like a perfect day to me.

The thing about theme based artwork is that it introduces character to your home, plus, I love it. Crowns are my latest love, but give me chandeliers, bird cages, hot air balloons and other whimsical art and I’m a happy girl. In an already elegant space, the right art, and by right I mean whatever it is your heart desires, can set the tone. For me I like a little something dreamy or sweet.

The curvy lines and contrasts add a bold pop of interest to any wall or surface they adorn. Crowns can be introduced into your space in a number of ways. The first painting pictured here is my favourite, but a smaller scale in a line drawing or a sketch might be just the thing for your space. Textiles are ever fun to play with. Chairs, ottomans, pillows or curtains are a perfect non-committal way to play with pattern.

Or for a larger scale full on installation, how about wallpaper? The crown wallpaper pictured here would be perfect for a closet or a bathroom. Or if you wanted to glam up a little girls room thiis wallpaper can be adorned with gems. Simply glue coloured glass marbles (the flat ones) directly onto the crowns.

Also, if you happen to be a queen with a rather sizeable collection of priceless crowns, you could always display them in tall glass cabinets with glittery warm lighting. That’s what I would do. Just saying. There are options for everyone.

Arabesque Tiles to Die For

I hope everyone had a refreshing and relaxing Thanksgiving weekend, filled with laughter and good food. SO VERY much to be thankful for right? Furniture, pretty tiles, loved ones, friends!!! The days have been so sunny and warm, everything seems brighter and better under wide open blue skies.

About the tiles, are you in love yet? I just cannot stop with the curvy geometric patterns right now. On my last visit to my fabulous nail lady, she hand-painted a pink and charcoal quatrefoil pattern on my nails and this week I can’t get enough of arabesque designs. And I see it everywhere I look, which is a wonderful, wonderful thing. These arabesque tiles are elegant and delicate and so very pretty. In my forever home I would do a kitchen backsplash in white ceramic in a heartbeat. And of course a chandelier in every room to up the pretty factor and balance the curvaceousness of the tiles.

The watery blue-green tiles in a bathroom, just saying, wow. Whichever of you are in your forever homes right now, do this! Please! For the sake of all things good and true. I found the arabesque tile pattern in three different mediums as shown here in glass, ceramic and stone. Each has its own special quality about it, however I think my fave is the glass. If you follow the link below the glass arabesque you’ll see a whole range of pretty geometric tiles. Let me know if you find the one…

Ottoman vs. Coffee Table

Ottomans are pretty hot right now and I will tell you why! But first let us think about the basic function of that little something you place in front of your sofa. Gender wise, I think the guys either need a place to put their feet or a spot to rest a drink, it depends on the guy, but this seems to be the most common concern! And for the ladies, style and a place to put pretty things is on the top of the list of requirements.

Not only is the immediate function of the ottoman or the coffee table important, but the overall function and usage of the room is something you want to consider. Is the room a rarely used but dainty sitting room? Is it the must-be comfy movie watching room? Or does it lay somewhere in between? Take a moment and visualize what you want the room to feel like.

Of course coffee tables are a classic choice, limitless styles are available to suit any type of decor and for the adventurous among you there are ideas out there for building your own, refinishing old ones and manipulating the new. You can arrange a vignette on the table with aptly named coffee table books, candles, and other items of interest.

However, the ottoman has its own individual attributes which add to its appeal. First of all you can comfortably put your feet up. At the sofa shop, this is a great option for people who like the idea of having a chaise on their sofa but don’t want to commit to it. The ottoman can be pushed right up to the sofa for those cozy movie watching nights. Or, place a tray on it and it can hold drinks (and of course pretty things!). When you have a dinner party or a family function the ottoman can be pushed aside and act as extra seating. Many ottomans offer storage and if you order a custom one you can add another layer of colour or texture to the room depending on if you choose fabric or leather.

So there! In your own coffee table vs. ottoman dilemma you now have some additional input to make a decision that works for you!

A Rainbow of Sofas

Sadie and Stella

So rainbows are somewhat rare and beautiful, a happening, an event in the sky, and they always put a smile on my face. What else puts a smile on my face? Well sofas of course, so I was thinking what could be happier than a rainbow coloured collection of sofas? Let us do away with neutrals and embrace some bright, flamboyant statement sofas!

While my favourites will forever remain in the turquoise, blue and green pallettes, I can appreciate any hue especially when shown as delicious candy pops of colour. The lemon one pictured below is cheerful and would be a lovely addition to a home in our northern climate where the winter can stretch on and on. This sofa would make even the greyest days bearable and perhaps even great.

While I do love neutrals (sand hues are my favourite right now) and they really can be dressed up any which way you like with bolder pillows, but there is something so dramatic about a sofa with punch. It may not be a choice for everyone, but i think if you absolutely love a certain colour than you will love that colour on a sofa for the duration of its life.

Bright Bazaar

I can’t say I remember all that lead up to the moment when I witnessed my favourite rainbow of all time, but I would like to think it was one of those sun showery kind of days that glisten with reflection and light refractions and swing between sun and gloom. I was little, at an amusement park with my grandparents, and we happened to be on a train. When we came around the bend, there it was, stretching in a perfect arc across the sky. That rainbow, burnished in my mind to this day.

The Every Girl

What can I say about turquoise that I haven’t already said? I just love it, plain and simple as that. But navy, well I have a bit of a thing for navy too, and it’s not for everyone, but look at the bright bold blue on this tufted little masterpiece pictured below. Sigh. SO pretty!!!

Are you bold enough to bring in one of these rainbow hued sofas into your living space? If so, which shade would be your choice? I think we all know what mine would be, but wait! I have already introduced a turquoise chair into my home. I guess you could say I love a little drama…

Double Trouble: Accent Chairs

20140826-211832-76712808.jpg

Well hello! What a summer! There was some heat, some travel, some lazy days, some painting days, and some beautiful inspiring nights. And while the weather holds steady, the imminent routine of the school year looms! So let’s chat about chairs. Accent chairs!

20140826-211911-76751896.jpg
Chatelaine

Accent chairs are an important part of my own personal room planning philosophy right now. I love them! I love them and here is why: they offer flexibility to your seating plan both now and in the future. That’s right friends, the future. I mean, things change right? Why not let some of your furniture change with you?

For instance, at this particular juncture in time you could place two accent chairs parallel to your sofa, two sofas across from one another with an accent chair at either end, or even two accent chairs in front of a window with a table between them.

20140826-211924-76764665.jpg
Spoond

And in the future, near or far, if you had to or wanted to split things up, a pair of chairs can easily be placed elsewhere! In a foyer, a den, an awkward hallway, etc. Or if you are really adventurous you could even unpair them, break those babies up. One could be placed in a bedroom, another beneath a window or next to a bookshelf for a reading or thinking spot. So very many options. And there you have it! Why I love accent chairs and why you should too!
