Three Ways to Ready Your Bedroom for Summer

Ahhh, the sun, so glorious, right? As we turn our homes over from the colder months with spring cleaning, the bedroom is an important place to swap out a few things to ready for the hot summer nights coming our way. Start with a complete top to bottom cleaning session and do the extra things that don’t get done as often as they should. Like what, you ask? Flip and rotate your mattress, clean under the bed, wash walls and windows…all of it. This is also a good time to move the room around if you want to try a different configuration.

What I love about this little list is that it is meant to be a quick fix. These tasks can be done quickly and efficiently and will bring optimal impact comfort-wise. Try one of the categories, two of them or all three! Summer living should be light and breezy as the days are. Everything easier. Everything simple. Bring on the summer! But first, open the windows and let the fresh air and sunshine into the room.

Bedding:

Fresh linens in a new colour will give your bed an instant makeover. Crisp white sheets are so classic, but depending on the room you could try blush pink (so hot right now), gray, sea foam or even pale yellow.

Remove your heavy winter duvet and replace it with a light summer duvet or a quilt or coverlet. Even in the summer, it’s so lovely to sleep in a bed with layers that you can peel off if you need to.

Pillows:

Take off the decorative pillows with dark heavy textures and fabrics and opt for soft hues. One option is to shop for seasonal covers with zippers so they can be changed out whenever you want to. This eliminates closets full of spare pillows like some people (not me ooooooof course). Shop for pillows with hefty down inserts. Furniture stores can often order them in an array of upholstery fabrics. They are well worth the investment as you will have them for years. Try to think a season ahead as there may be order times involved if you go the custom route.

Curtains:

Light white cotton curtains with some texture are perfect for summer. If you want to add a pop of colour your draperies are a perfect way to experiment with a bold colour or pattern. If you are a little shy with it, try adding a trim of gros grain ribbon to white curtains, along the inside edges of each drape panel. Fuchsia, Kelly green, turquoise, or any other bright colour will work. However, if you want to go for it, go for it! Look for something with blackout capabilities if you require darkness. Here in Alberta we have light until 11pm in the summer months! It’s beautiful.

Carpet:

This might be the last update you would think of, but even a small one with a soft texture can be the detail required to ease you into your day whether its summer or not. As someone who generally wakes up grouchy until fully awake, its the little things that help act as happiness cues. Oh yeah, being awake is awesome!!

Decluttering

Closet:

Empty it and start over. Doesn’t that sound like great fun? I find it hard to get rid of clothing, but it is vital to keeping an organized closet. All those clothes that don’t fit or you simply don’t want to wear anymore, they need to go. So what do you do with them all? Donate the slightly worn stuff, or even better start a clothing swap with friends. Or have a yard sale. Brand names can often be taken to consignment stores or you can sell them online (think Girlboss!) Also, get rid of that weird stuff you bought for no reason, let’s face it, it has to go!

Dresser:

Same thing as your closet! Dump everything and start over. Only add back items you will currently wear. Fold everything up nice and neat. If you want to get really fancy and you are up for a DIY project, line your drawers or the sides of them with a pretty printed paper. So much impact in the photo pictured.

Night-side tables:

Remove any books you’ve already read, organize drawers, replace emptied products (free pass to shop for new stuff) and rethink the types of things that have collected here. I like to have reading books and writing books close by at all times. I also need a place to put my earrings and bracelets and some scented hand cream and water.

Create a vignette! Is it time for a new set of lamps? Corral all your necessities and arrange them together. Books can be stacked. Add a plant or some fresh flowers and a decorative dish to house jewelry. Download the step-by-step PDF for some help. I’ve got you covered!

Pictures and Art:

Whether you design a whole gallery wall or just change one picture, you will get immediate impact and give the space a fresh look.

Upcycle something from another room. This is so fun, especially if you are doing a gallery wall. Take a little walk through your home and try to look at things with fresh eyes. I did this for my living room last summer and I used art that I never would have thought to put together, but it looks marvelous!

Mirrors:

Mirrors bounce light and create the illusion of space, plus they are pretty! Hang one over your dresser or get a full length one (my favourite) and you’ll be able to do a proper wardrobe check before you leave your room.

Jewelry:

All that beautiful jewelry tucked away in boxes can be displayed. Even with a small display or a delicate dish (vintage or white milk glass?) a few curated pieces can act as part of the rooms decor.

Lighting:

Ambient lighting is essential in the bedroom. Bedside table lamps should be tall enough to reflect light down upon your book. A pair of pendant lamps on each side of the bed will free up tabletop space if you need it. Another lamp can be placed on your dresser if you prefer back lighting.

Once I reorganized my bedroom I realized a few things. First of all, this should be done for every room for every season as it is so refreshing and it made me feel happy, so it will probably make you happy too. I love the way shuffling, cleaning and decluttering changes the energy of your home. Also, when you edit the things around you, you keep only what is loved or needed, the rest can go and this in itself is a really great life lesson, don’t you think?

XOXO
