Hello, hello! There has been a major turn in weather in these northern parts. We are in full in winter mode! So normally I would look for ways to hibernate, but this year I am embracing the cold, the ice, the frost and with it the stark beauty that cloaks the streets in sheer shades of white, like a wonderland.

And naturally this means we are spending more time indoors snuggled up with a book. I know I am. Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan is my current fiction choice. It is at once beautiful and sad, as it chronicles the lives of three Parisian sisters, ballet and murder in the late 1800’s. What’s not to love!

The top chaise has an arm on each side, but it is backless. Many of the others have one arm. When you custom order a chaise you can often decide which side you would like the arm on. Or you can opt for a two-armed chaise like the one directly above. Another reason to custom order is choice of fabric. To me, a chaise should be adorned with a soft luxe fabric in a colour that appeals to you.

Details to consider include tufting, leg design, nailhead trim, and cushion style.

Once you have found your chaise, where do you place it? The obvious choice is near a window or in a corner as a stand alone piece, but you can also add it to a seating arrangement. For instance, a chaise with a few accent chairs will fill up a condo sized room. Or if you have abundant space place the chaise opposite a sofa with a chair at each end.

Dress your chaise up as you would a sofa with pillows and a throw. While a sofa is happy with uniform rectangular pillows, and a feature pillow, the chaise can take on pillows of varying sizes and shapes. Keep it simple, and above all comfortable.

And we close this post with a warning: your best intentions for reading the afternoon away may often turn into a long dreamy nap. And that friends, is quite alright!
